GP50 Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The EMD GP50 debuted in 1980, bringing 3,500 horsepower and advanced technology to the four-axle locomotive world. With its 16-645F3B engine and microprocessor controls, it outperformed older models like the GP40 while boosting efficiency.

Between 1980 and 1985, 278 units rolled out for railroads like Santa Fe, Southern Railway, and Missouri Pacific. However, despite its power, the GP50 didn’t quite match up in fuel efficiency to six-axle locomotives, limiting its widespread adoption.

Many units were later rebuilt into lower-horsepower models like the GP38-3, but the GP50 still marked an important step in locomotive evolution.
