SD60M/I Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The SD60M is a diesel-electric locomotive built by Electro-Motive Division (EMD), introduced in 1987. It was designed as part of the SD60 series, featuring a 3,800-horsepower EMD 710 engine. The SD60M stands out due to its wide-nose cab, which offers better crew visibility and safety, distinguishing it from other SD60 variants.

EMD built the SD60M until 1995, with railroads like Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern, and Canadian National being primary customers. Around 200 units were produced, and it was used for high-speed freight and heavy-haul operations. Its powerful engine and robust design made it popular for tough freight routes.

The SD60M was eventually phased out in favor of more modern locomotives, like the SD70M. Despite this, many SD60Ms remain in service, often refurbished and upgraded, continuing to perform reliably for freight operations.
