SD70M/I Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The EMD SD70M and SD70I debuted in the early 1990s as part of EMD’s next-generation SD70 series. Both delivered 4,000 horsepower from the reliable 16-710G3B engine and featured advanced modular electronics for strong pulling power, improved fuel efficiency, and easier maintenance.

The SD70M, widely adopted by U.S. railroads like Union Pacific, featured either a traditional cab or the later wide-nose “whisper cab” for quieter, more comfortable operations. The SD70I, purchased only by Canadian National, introduced EMD’s “Isolated Cab,” a fully shock-mounted design that reduced noise and vibration for crews on long northern hauls.

Together, the SD70M and SD70I cemented the SD70 series as EMD’s flagship locomotive in the 1990s, combining power, reliability, and crew comfort, and paving the way for later AC-traction models like the SD70MAC and SD70ACe.
