C40-9/C44-9W Locomotive

Prototype Information

The GE C44-9W, or Dash 9-44CW, rolled onto the scene in 1993 as one of the most dominant six-axle locomotives of its time. Packing a 4,400-horsepower GE 7FDL-16 engine, it delivered the power, efficiency, and reliability that railroads demanded for heavy freight.

Railroads like BNSF, Norfolk Southern, and Union Pacific quickly put thousands to work, with over 3,500 units built between 1993 and 2004. Its wide-nose safety cab, microprocessor controls, and AC/DC transmission gave it an edge over older models.

Even today, Dash 9s keep running—many rebuilt into AC44C6M models with AC traction motors to stay competitive. It’s a locomotive that refuses to fade away.
