GP40-2 Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The EMD GP40-2, built between 1972 and 1986, took the reliable GP40 design and made it even better. With its 3,000-horsepower 16-645E3 engine and the new Dash 2 modular electronics, it became a powerhouse of efficiency and ease of maintenance.

Railroads across North America quickly picked it up, with 1,143 units rolling out for companies like Union Pacific, Burlington Northern, and Chessie System. It outlasted many of its successors, and even today, you can still spot GP40-2s on the rails—sometimes rebuilt, sometimes in secondary service, but always proving their worth.
