B32-8WH Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The GE B32-8WH is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Electric from 1991 to 1992. It produces 3,200 horsepower with a 12-cylinder 7FDL engine. The “B” stands for its B-B wheel arrangement, and the “W” refers to its wide-nose safety cab. The “H” means it includes Head-End Power (HEP), which powers passenger car systems like lighting and air conditioning.

Amtrak ordered all 20 units and used them mainly on short-distance routes, especially in California and the Midwest. The B32-8WH handled both traction and passenger power, making it ideal for corridor service.

Amtrak started phasing them out in the 2010s, but a few still run or remain on standby. The B32-8WH stands out as one of the few GE freight-style locomotives built specifically for passenger service in the U.S.
