Chemical Tank Car

Prototype Information

First appearing on American railroads in the late 1940s, Chemical Tank Cars provided a safe and efficient means for transporting industrial liquid loads. To protect the potentially volatile or corrosive chemicals they were intended to carry, the cars were built with more durable construction methods than previous tank cars and were among the first to feature a pressurized, welded body. Some of their primary spotting features were their specially-designed domes, featuring safety platforms to provide greater protection for both the contents of the cars and those handling them.
