F9 Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
The EMD F9 rolled out in 1954, packing a stronger 1,750-horsepower EMD 567C V16 engine and upgraded electrical systems. It built on the success of the F7, but by then, railroads were shifting toward more versatile road-switcher locomotives like the GP9.
Despite the changing industry, major railroads like Union Pacific, Burlington Northern, and Canadian National put the F9 to work. It powered freight and passenger trains across North America, proving its reliability. With around 100 A-units and 150 B-units produced, it didn’t match the F7’s numbers but still held its ground.
Some F9s outlasted newer locomotives, with railroads like Alaska Railroad rebuilding them for extended service. Today, a handful still run on heritage lines, keeping the legacy alive.
