48' Exterior Post Container

Prototype Information

The 48′ exterior post container emerged in the late 1980s to meet the growing need for larger shipping containers that could handle more cargo. As global trade expanded and intermodal transportation advanced, shipping companies pushed for containers that went beyond the standard 40-foot size. To meet this demand, manufacturers developed the 48′ container, which quickly gained traction, especially in the North American market.

Designed with an exterior post structure, these containers used vertical posts on the outside to strengthen the frame while maximizing interior space. This design made the containers more durable and better suited for carrying heavy loads and withstanding frequent handling. By the early 1990s, 48′ containers became a staple in domestic shipping across the United States, as railroads and trucking companies adopted them to improve efficiency and reduce transportation costs.
