4750 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

The 4750 covered hopper revolutionized grain and bulk commodity transport when Pullman-Standard introduced it in the 1970s. With a 4,750-cubic-foot capacity and a 100-ton load rating, this four-bay hopper quickly became the industry standard for hauling grain, fertilizer, and dry bulk goods.

Replaced Older Designs: The 4750 improved on previous 4,000-cubic-foot hoppers, increasing capacity and efficiency.

Built for Strength: An all-welded steel construction boosted durability and cut down on maintenance.

Dominated Freight Rail: Railroads and leasing companies ordered these cars in huge numbers, making them a staple on freight trains for decades.

Still in Service: While larger designs like the 5150 and 5250 have taken over some duties, thousands of 4750s still roll across North America.
