4785 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

The Pullman-Standard 4785 covered hopper, introduced in the early 1970s, became a widely used rail car for transporting bulk commodities. With a capacity of 4,785 cubic feet, it was designed primarily for mid-density goods such as grain, soybeans, and other agricultural products. Its four-bay design and welded steel construction allowed for efficient loading and unloading, while the covered roof protected cargo from weather exposure.

Adopted by major railroads and leasing companies, the Pullman-Standard 4785 was a reliable workhorse for bulk transport. Its design influenced the development of future high-capacity covered hoppers, cementing its place in railroading history as a versatile and durable freight car.
