5161 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

The Trinity 5161 covered hopper hit the rails in the 1990s, giving grain and bulk commodity shippers a more efficient, high-capacity alternative to older designs. With a 5,161-cubic-foot capacity and a three-bay configuration, it quickly became a favorite for hauling grain, dried distillers grains (DDGs), and fertilizer.

Bigger & Better: Trinity designed the 5161 to outperform the 4750, offering more capacity and improved efficiency.

Stronger Build: An all-welded steel body replaced older riveted designs, cutting down on maintenance.

Faster Unloading: The three-bay setup sped up loading and unloading, reducing turnaround times.

Dominated Bulk Freight: Railroads and leasing companies ordered these in huge numbers, making them a staple on grain and bulk routes.

Still Rolling: While newer designs like the Trinity 5200 and 5241 are taking over, the 5161 remains a workhorse on North American railroads.
