8,000 Gallon Tank Car
Prototype Information
The ACF Type 27 8,000-gallon tank car hit the rails in the late 1920s, quickly becoming a workhorse for transporting petroleum, chemicals, and other bulk liquids. Built by American Car & Foundry (ACF), these tank cars featured riveted steel construction, later evolving into welded designs for added durability.
During World War II, the Type 27 played a critical role in moving fuel and chemicals to support the war effort. Even after the war, industries kept these tank cars rolling well into the mid-20th century. Though newer designs eventually took over, some Type 27s continued working on short-line railroads and industrial sites into the 1960s and beyond.
