Gunderson Maxi IV Well Car

Prototype Infromation

The Gunderson Maxi-IV well car hit the rails in the early 2000s, built by Gunderson LLC, a subsidiary of The Greenbrier Companies. Designed for efficiency, it quickly became a go-to for intermodal freight transport.

Building on earlier designs like the Maxi-Stack I, II, and III, the Maxi-IV stepped up the game by fully accommodating 53-foot containers in both the top and bottom positions. Railroads across North America jumped on board, making it a common sight in double-stack container trains.

Its three-unit articulated design reduced weight, improved fuel efficiency, and provided better stability. Even today, the Maxi-IV remains one of the most widely used intermodal well cars on the market.
