NSC 3294 Mechanical Reefer

Prototype Information

The National Steel Car (NSC) 3294 cu.ft. mechanical reefer was built in 1968 exclusively for the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP). It hauled hung sides of fresh beef from western Canada to eastern markets. Equipped with meat rails and mechanical refrigeration, it kept cargo cold and safe throughout the journey.

Railfans often call it the “Cadillac” of North American reefers for its durability and efficiency. These cars stayed in service from the late 1960s through 2002. Most retained CP Rail’s Red Script paint, though some later wore the Multimark scheme.
