57' R-70 Mechanical Reefer

Prototype Information

The R-70-15 mechanical reefer was a refrigerated rail car used primarily by the Southern Pacific Railroad (SP) and other railroads to transport perishable goods. It belonged to the R-70 series, which featured mechanical refrigeration systems instead of older ice-cooled designs.

Introduced in the 1970s, the R-70-15 improved on earlier models like the R-70-10 and R-70-12.

Designed with a 70-ton capacity, it efficiently transported fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy.

Used diesel-powered refrigeration units, ensuring consistent temperature control over long distances.

Featured an insulated steel body, which provided better thermal efficiency and durability than older reefers.

Operated extensively in agricultural regions, especially in the western United States, where it supported California’s produce industry.

Ran into the late 20th century, before railroads replaced it with more advanced refrigerated cars.
