50' FMC 5277 Box Car

Prototype Information

The FMC 5277 Boxcar was a workhorse of North American railroads in the 1970s and 1980s. Built by FMC Corporation, these 50-foot, 5,277-cubic-foot boxcars were designed to handle a variety of loads, including paper, lumber, and bulk goods that needed protection from the elements. Equipped with 10-12 foot sliding or plug doors, they made loading and unloading fast and efficient.

FMC didn’t just dip its toes into the railcar business — it dove in during the 1960s and 1970s, producing durable and reliable boxcars that quickly gained favor with major railroads and leasing companies. Railbox (RBOX) and many others added these boxcars to their fleets, keeping them rolling across the continent.

Though FMC exited the railcar manufacturing business in the mid-1980s, the 5277 boxcars kept rolling for decades. Their sturdy design and reliable performance kept them in service well into the 2000s.
