50' PS 5344 Box Car

Prototype Information

The Pullman-Standard 5344 Boxcar dominated North American freight lines starting in the mid-1970s. Built by Pullman-Standard (P-S), one of the country’s top railcar manufacturers, the 5344 was a 50-foot, high-capacity boxcar designed to handle the growing demands of industries shipping paper, lumber, and other bulk commodities. Its 5344-cubic-foot capacity and 10-12 foot sliding or plug doors made it a go-to choice for efficient loading and unloading.

Railroads and leasing companies jumped on board quickly. Railbox (RBOX), created to address nationwide freight car shortages, ordered massive numbers of these boxcars to keep goods moving. Major carriers like Burlington Northern (BN) and Southern Pacific (SP) also added the 5344 to their fleets, ensuring its presence across North American tracks.

Pullman-Standard’s focus on durability paid off. The 5344 boxcars stayed in service for decades, with many rolling well into the 2000s. Even after Pullman-Standard stopped producing railcars in 1982, these boxcars kept hauling freight, proving their lasting reliability.
