Evans 4780 Covered Hopper

Prototype Information

The Evans 4780 covered hopper was built by Evans Products Company in the 1970s and early 1980s to transport bulk commodities like grain, fertilizer, and plastic pellets. With a 4,780-cubic-foot capacity, this railcar featured a durable welded steel construction and multiple discharge bays for efficient unloading.

Railroads and leasing companies, including North American Car Company and GATX, widely used these hoppers. Evans’ design set a standard for covered hoppers, influencing later models. Although Evans eventually left the railcar business, many 4780 hoppers remain in service today, often rebuilt or modified for modern use.
