60' Flat Car
Prototype Information
Railroad flatcars have played an important role in the transportation of goods and materials across the United States since the early days of railroads in the 19th century. The first flatcars were simply platforms with wheels that were used to transport goods such as lumber and coal. As railroads became more sophisticated and rail lines expanded, flatcars became more specialized and were used to transport a wider variety of goods.
Between 1964 and 1975, Trailer Train (now known as TTX Co.) acquired a fleet of 5,000 modern 60′ flat cars. Similar 60’ cars are rostered by most major US railroads. Built by ACF, Thrall, and Pullman Standard, the TTX cars were assigned to various classes to handle loads as diverse as auto frames, logs, military vehicles, farm equipment, and construction equipment. Some were even modified to handle intermodal containers.
