Mini-Hy Cube Box Car

Prototype Information

The 40′ Mini Hy-Cube boxcar hit the rails in the 1960s, built for shippers needing extra interior height without the length of traditional high-cube cars. Designed for bulky but lightweight cargo like appliances and paper products, these boxcars maximized volume while staying within clearance limits.

Builders like Pullman-Standard and Greenville Steel Car Company rolled out these unique cars, but their short length limited efficiency compared to 50′ and 60′ Hy-Cubes. By the 1980s, most were either retired or repurposed as longer cars took over the job.
