SD75M Diesel Locomotive
Prototype Information
The EMD SD75M hit the rails between 1994 and 1996, bringing serious power and performance to freight operations. Built by Electro-Motive Division (EMD), this locomotive was a beefed-up version of the SD70M, packing a 16-710G3B V16 diesel engine that cranked out 4,300 horsepower—a solid upgrade from the SD70M’s 4,000 horsepower. It was EMD’s answer to General Electric’s Dash 9 series, built to dominate heavy freight routes.
The “M” in SD75M signaled the use of the modified wide-nose North American Safety Cab, giving crews better safety and comfort. With its C-C wheel arrangement and an advanced EM2000 microprocessor control system, the SD75M delivered improved traction and fuel efficiency, making it a workhorse in demanding conditions.
Santa Fe Railway (ATSF) was the biggest customer, snapping up 51 units before merging with Burlington Northern to form BNSF Railway. The remaining 25 units went to Canadian National Railway (CN), which also put them to work hauling heavy loads.
The SD75M wasn’t just another locomotive—it was built for serious power and endurance. While production only lasted a couple of years, these locomotives are still pulling their weight today, with many still active on BNSF and CN tracks.
