H21 Quad Hopper

Prototype Information

The H21 class of hopper cars was originally designed by the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) to carry coke, a material used in steel making. The cars were built between 1909 and 1914, and each was designed to carry up to 4.5 tons of coke.

In 1922, the H21 hoppers were upgraded with heavier trucks and converted to H21a hoppers to haul coal.
