Description

Railroad Short Name: IT

By 1954, railroads were buying diesels as fast as EMD could build them, and customer demand for more powerful units carried over into the switcher market as well. With the introduction of the new 567C prime mover that year, EMD rolled out new 900- (SW9) and 1200-horsepower (SW1200) models, which shared the same basic body with minor variations. SW1200s were produced through 1966, when earlier GPs began taking over yard chores, but these later SW models have lead long lives, with many still serving shortline and industrial roads long after “retirement” by the original owners.

Based on IT units in service from the early 1970s to early 1980s with:

  • Plain bearing Flexicoil trucks with cutout frame skirting
  • Brass Leslie S3L air horn
  • Brass firecracker radio antenna
  • Dual lens headlights
  • 930-gallon tank fuel with exposed air cooler coils
  • Drop steps
  • Footboards on pilots

With improved body tooling, new sill-mounted handrails, Flexicoil trucks and many other details, our next run of WalthersProto(R) EMD SW1200s will be perfect power for your HO railroad. Model features include:

  • Based on units in service 1954 to present
  • Flexicoil or AAR Type A sideframes with plain or roller bearings as appropriate
  • Sill- or hood-mounted handrails as appropriate
  • Available with ESU LokSound 5 sound for DCC and DC layouts
  • Road-specific details
  • 5-pole, skew-wound, high-torque, high-efficiency can motor
  • Helical gears with 14:1 ratio for smooth, ultra-quiet running
  • LED constant and directional headlights
  • Heavy die-cast metal underframe
  • Proto MAX(TM) metal knuckle couplers
