GP15 Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The EMD GP15 series was introduced by Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of General Motors between 1976 and 1982 to meet the growing demand for reliable, fuel-efficient locomotives for yard and branch line service. Railroads needed a modern replacement for aging first-generation switchers, and EMD delivered with the GP15, a versatile and cost-effective solution.

There was three main variants. The GP15-1 built between 1976 and 1982. Powered by a 12-cylinder EMD 645E engine, producing 1,500 horsepower. A total of 310 units were built, with major buyers including Missouri Pacific (MP) and Conrail. The GP15AC introduced in 1982 with an alternator instead of a generator. Only 30 units were produced. The GP15T turbocharged version with an EMD 645E3C engine. Built in 1982, with just 28 units delivered.
