ES44 "GEVo" Diesel Locomotive

Prototype Information

The ES44 series, part of GE’s Evolution Series, hit the rails in the mid-2000s, replacing older locomotives while meeting stricter emissions standards. Packing 4,400 horsepower and a GEVO-12 engine, these diesel-electric giants became essential to North American freight operations.

GE introduced several versions of the ES44 to suit different needs. The ES44AC, used by railroads like BNSF, CSX, and Canadian Pacific, relies on AC traction for heavy freight hauling. The ES44DC, an early model with DC traction, found a home with CSX. The ES44C4, designed specifically for BNSF, features an A1A-A1A wheel arrangement to improve adhesion. Later, GE pushed emissions compliance further with the ET44AC, a Tier 4 version that reduced environmental impact.

As railroads retired aging Dash 9 locomotives, the ES44 series took over mainline service, proving its reliability and efficiency. These locomotives continue to power freight trains across North America, keeping goods moving every day.
